Kevin Oliver, President and Founder of Oliver Tax Group

Meet Kevin Oliver — President & Founder

Kevin Oliver is the President and Founder of Oliver Tax Group LLC, a premier tax advisory and business consulting firm serving North Texas since 2003. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Kevin launched his professional career at Mike Oliver CPA before expanding his financial expertise as a Fractional CFO for a major BBQ restaurant chain in North Texas. This unique blend of traditional accounting and executive-level financial strategy inspired him to establish Oliver Tax Group, where he now leads a dedicated team of CPAs, controllers, and tax advisors.

Kevin's methodology centers on proactive, year-round tax planning and real-time financial guidance, helping startup businesses, entrepreneurs, and established corporations navigate complex regulatory landscapes with confidence. He is deeply committed to client education, transparent communication, and delivering customized financial procedures that drive sustainable growth and minimize tax liability.

Tax Preparation & Planning

TAX ADVISORY | YEAR-ROUND PLANNING

From start up businesses to large corporations, we cater to a wide range of clients and entrepreneurs that realize they need more than a tax preparer. The most unique aspect of our firm is that we meet with clients throughout the year for financial analysis, tax planning, and implementing business strategies. No more waiting until year end for planning. We map out the year with our business clients to meet routinely with prescheduled appointments. We call this their "Initial Plan", "Revised Plan", and the big dance we call the "Final Plan" held at year end. From there, the tax return preparation process is smooth and stress free, taking all the worry and fear out of tax season.

Communication & Responsiveness

You make decisions every day, so why would you not regularly seek council? If you're not routinely speaking with your tax advisor, your business is suffering in ways you cannot imagine. We realize the needs of our clients go far beyond having someone plug in numbers to their tax return once a year. Our main goal is to provide our clients with knowledge to empower them to grow their business, in real time

How We Help North Texas Business Owners

Most tax firms see you once a year. You bring them your documents in March, they file your return, and you don’t hear from them again until the following March. That’s the industry norm — but it’s also why so many business owners are leaving money on the table every single year.

When your situation changes — a new employee, a big equipment purchase, an S-Corp election that could lower your self-employment tax — a once-a-year preparer isn’t positioned to help you make those decisions in time. By the time they see your books, the window for most planning strategies is already closed.

We built Oliver Tax Group differently. Our clients hear from us throughout the year, not just in April, because that’s the only way tax strategy actually works.

Our Year-Round Planning Model

We use a three-meeting structure with every business client we take on. We call them the Initial Plan, the Revised Plan, and the Final Plan.

Early in the year

Initial Plan

  • Review prior-year financial statements and tax return
  • Examine current year-to-date financial statements
  • Project net profits/annual income
  • Build current year “if/then” scenarios
  • Develop current-year tax projections
  • Recommendations for tax strategies
Mid-year check-in

Revised Plan

  • Review year-to-date financials and compare to Initial Plan projections
  • Adjust strategy for revenue shifts
  • Refine net profit estimates & tax projections
  • Make fine-tuned estimated tax payment recommendations
Oct – NovMost Critical

Final Plan

  • Phase 1: CFO-like analysis of YTD financial statements to ensure accuracy
  • Phase 2: Project net profits by taking actual year-to-date data & December projections
  • Phase 3: Calculate estimated personal tax liability based on profit projections
  • Phase 4: Discuss tax strategies and vital year-end decisions
  • Phase 5: Final discussion & closure to project final tax liability and give peace of mind

Proactive tax planning in real time with custom tailored advice

Work year-round with a tax strategist, CFO, and financial partner

Ultimate peace of mind with a stress-free tax season

This model is the core reason our clients pay less in tax than they would with a standard tax prep firm. Not because we do anything unusual — because we’re in the conversation before the decisions get made, not after.

Financial Reporting That Tells You Where You Actually Stand

Business owners make decisions every day: whether to hire, whether to expand, whether to buy equipment or lease it. Every one of those decisions has a financial component. And most of those decisions are only as good as the data behind them.

Accurate books aren’t just a compliance tool — they’re the foundation for every business decision you make.

A lot of business owners come to us running blind. Their QuickBooks is outdated, miscategorized, or they simply don’t understand what the reports are actually telling them. Profit on the income statement doesn’t match the bank balance. Receivables are aging badly but nobody’s flagged it. These disconnects create real problems — not just at tax time, but when it’s time to apply for a loan, take on a partner, or decide whether a new service line makes financial sense.

Common Warning Signs Your Books Need Attention

  • Your bank balance and QuickBooks balance don’t match
  • You can’t answer “is my business profitable?” without calling your accountant
  • Accounts receivable is climbing but nobody’s following up on invoices
  • You’re guessing at cash flow when deciding whether to hire

We work directly with QuickBooks Online and Desktop across all our business clients. We maintain the accuracy of your books on an ongoing basis, and we don’t just hand you a report and leave. We walk through your balance sheet, profit and loss, and cash flow statement in plain language so you understand what’s actually happening in your business. Some clients prefer written summaries. Others like a video walkthrough. Either way, your financial statements should be tools you use to run your company, not documents you file away.

Balance Sheet

Every account reconciled. Know your true net worth and borrowing position at any point in the year.

Profit & Loss

Revenue and expense trends flagged before they become problems — not discovered at year-end.

Cash Flow

Know when a shortfall is coming three months before it arrives — not the week before payroll.

For clients who need more than routine bookkeeping, we provide controller-level oversight and full financial statement preparation — giving you a picture of your business finances that’s accurate, current, and actually readable.

Our Values

Our firm provides outstanding service to our clients because of our dedication to the three underlying values of being innovative when creating solutions, responding timely to our clients, and delivering the highest quality of service with a focus on maintaining strong relationships.

SIMPLICITY

RESULTS

Easy Solutions for Complex Problems

Take a breath of fresh air, because we do things differently. The days of scattered receipts, long rolls of adding machine tape, and antiquated bookkeeping styles are things of the past.

REAL-TIME RESPONSES, REAL-WORLD SOLUTIONS

The #1 reason a client leaves their prior tax preparer is the lack of communication and proactive advice. We realize the needs of our clients go far beyond a tax return. Our main goal is to provide our clients with knowledge to empower them to grow their business.

BUILDING TRUST THROUGH ENGAGEMENT

At Oliver Tax Group LLC, we are able to create solutions for our clients that have never been provided to them by other firms. We are hands-on in our approach to finding the record keeping solutions of our clients.

PLANNING THAT DELIVERS RESULTS

Every client is different and has different needs. We take time to listen to the needs of our clients and think outside of the box to create ongoing procedures. These results are what makes us one of the most unique firms in the area.

Tax Strategy That Goes Beyond Filing Your Return

Filing your return is the end of the process. Planning your tax position is the beginning of it — and most firms only show up for the end.

Two strategies that can meaningfully reduce what a business owner owes, but both require decisions made before December 31:

S-Corp Election

Split owner income into salary + distributions. For businesses netting $80K+, this can save several thousand dollars in self-employment tax annually.

QBI Deduction (Sec. 199A)

Up to 20% deduction on pass-through income for qualifying business owners — but income thresholds and W-2 wage limits apply.

The S-Corp election allows eligible business owners to draw a reasonable salary from their company and take remaining profits as distributions, reducing the share of income subject to self-employment tax (currently 15.3%). For business owners generating $80,000 or more in net profit, this election — governed under Internal Revenue Code Subchapter S — can save several thousand dollars annually. But the election has to be made within IRS-specified deadlines, and the salary paid has to be defensible as reasonable for the services performed. Doing this incorrectly creates its own problems.

The Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction under Section 199A of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act offers up to a 20% deduction on pass-through business income for qualifying taxpayers. The rules involve income thresholds, specified service trade restrictions, and W-2 wage limits — but for business owners who qualify, this is a substantial deduction that a year-round advisor should be actively managing, not discovering at filing time.

We Also Handle

  • Section 179 and bonus depreciation for equipment purchases
  • Multi-entity structuring for owners with multiple companies
  • Payroll tax compliance and quarterly filing
  • Sales tax registration and reporting
  • IRS notice response — when the IRS sends a letter, we handle it

Fractional CFO Services for Growing Businesses

Not every business needs a $150,000 full-time CFO. But every growing business needs someone thinking strategically about its finances — not just someone categorizing last month’s transactions.

What This Looks Like in Practice

  • Attending leadership meetings to evaluate acquisitions or expansion decisions
  • Building multi-year financial models for bank financing conversations
  • Designing compensation structures that reduce year-end tax exposure
  • Managing cash flow across multiple locations or revenue streams
  • Translating financial statements into clear operational guidance

Fractional CFO work means your business gets executive-level financial strategy without the full-time overhead.

Fractional CFO work means we act as your executive-level financial advisor on a part-time basis. In practice, that looks different for every client. Some need us in leadership meetings, helping evaluate whether an acquisition makes financial sense. Others need a three-year financial model before approaching a bank for a line of credit. Some need help designing a compensation structure that doesn’t get buried by taxes at year-end.

Kevin Oliver served as fractional CFO for one of the largest BBQ restaurant chains in North Texas. That role — managing P&Ls across multiple locations, handling tight food-cost margins, navigating multi-entity accounting, supporting growth decisions in real time — is what shapes the way we advise business clients today. We’ve been in the room when those decisions get made, and we understand what a CFO is actually supposed to do beyond keeping the books.

Who We Work With

Our clients range from first-year entrepreneurs filing their first Schedule C to multi-location operators managing complex entity structures. The common thread is that they’re running real businesses and need an advisor who understands both the tax side and the operational side of their financial picture.

Professional Services

Medical & dental practices, attorneys, contractors, and consultants generating strong revenue but without a structured tax strategy to keep more of it.

Restaurant & Hospitality

Operators navigating tip credits, multi-location P&Ls, sales tax, and tight margins that leave no room for year-end tax surprises.

Construction & Contractors

Job-cost accounting, equipment depreciation under Sec. 179, project-based cash flow, and payroll tax for a field workforce.

“My prior tax preparer never communicated with me and my team very well, so I thought it was time to find another firm. Working with Oliver Tax Group has been such an eye opening experience. Now they handle all the financial reporting for my businesses, work with my team as a CFO, and meet with me throughout the year for planning. Wish I would have made that move sooner!”
